Tips to Make From Scratch Frankenstein Sugar Cookies Recipe

You don’t need any fancy equipment to make these Frankenstein Cookies for Halloween, hallelujah! By using both ends of popular Wilton decorating tips, you can create the cut-out eyes from ready-made fondant! Be sure to have the kids join you in the kitchen for this one, it is so fun to prepare! I recommend using a Wilton decorating mat to decorate a cut onto. It makes this recipe so much easier to prepare and also helps to keep your workspace neat! I also highly encourage you use a good quality sharp knife or pizza cutter for a nice clean cut when creating with the ready-made fondant and cutting out your cookies initially, the sharper the better!

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. To prepare the adoooorable cookies, cream together your stick of butter, sugar, and egg in a large mixing bowl.

Cream Butter Sugar and Egg in a Bowl for Frankenstein Cookies

In a smaller mixing bowl, sift together the all purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

Sifted Flour Baking Powder and Salt for Frankenstein Cookies

Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix together well. Your cookie dough will start to form!

As the cookie dough starts to take shape, add in the Kelly green gel food coloring. Knead with your hands until the dough is formed and completely tinted through by the food coloring. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in your refrigerator for at least one hour.

Tinted Cookie Dough for Frankenstein Cookies

Remove dough from fridge and roll onto a floured surface (like the Wilton decorating mat) with a floured rolling pin until it’s about 1/4 of an inch thick. Cut dough into squares, about 2 inches x 2 inches in size using a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Place on a lined baking sheet and bake for about 7-8 minutes. Allow to cool fully on a wire rack to cool completely before decorating. (Any dough that’s left over you can mash together, re-roll out, and cut more cookies until you’re out of dough.)

Cut Dough into Squares for Frankenstein Cookies

Roll out the white fondant so that it’s about 1/4 of an inch thick. Use the base of a Wilton #12 decorating tip to cut out 30-48 white fondant circles (depending on how many cookies you’ve baked, you will need two white fondant circles per cookie). Next, roll out the black fondant so that it’s about 1/4 of an inch thick. Use the tip of Wilton #12 decorating tip to cut out 30-48 black fondant circles, also depending on how many cookies have been baked. We opted to make our own eyes here instead of using candy eyes (this way we can control how they look).

Roll and Cut Out Fondants for Frankenstein Cookies

Place one black fondant circle on each white fondant circle. Dot black decorating frosting on the back of each fondant “eye” piece. Place two on each cookie.

Add Fondant Eyes to Frankenstein Cookies

Attach Wilton tip #3 on black decorating frosting and draw a smile on each cookie. Knead remaining black and white fondant together to blend a piece of fondant that’s grey in color. Roll out spheres, about 1/4 of an inch in size. Flatten slightly. (You could also use mini chocolate chips here if you wanted to, too.)

Draw an Icing Smile on the Frankenstein Cookies

Attach Wilton tip #233 on black decorating frosting and frost hair on each cookie.

Frost Hair onto Frankenstein Cookies

Dot black decorating frosting on each flattened grey fondant sphere and attach one on each side of the cookie – these will act as Frankenstein’s monster’s bolts.

Add Fondant Dots to Frankenstein Cookies

Serve and enjoy! Look at these freaking adorable things! Aren’t they perfect? Look at those Frankenstein faces!
