If you had to come up with the perfect tagline for life in 2020, it might be: “I don’t want this.” So that makes one working mom’s laugh-inducing school photo fail the perfect way to remember this strange year.
When Brittany Kinley filled out the online form for her 5-year-old son Mason’s kindergarten school picture, it asked her to type in a name for engraving on the photo. “The program wouldn’t let me continue to the next page without filling it in,” Kinley told Popsugar, “so I wrote, ‘I don’t want this’ thinking they just wouldn’t include it. They ended up printing it on the front instead.”
When Kinley received her package of photos, she loved her son’s gleaming smile so much that she didn’t even notice his new moniker in the bottom corner. While showing off the photo to her mother-in-law, Kinley made the discovery. “In the beginning I was upset because it’s Mason’s first official school photo,” she said, “but then we all started laughing hysterically and it hasn’t stopped since.”
Kinley, who owns The Bee’s Knees Custom Design, decided to share the laughs by posting the photo to Facebook. “I’m sure everyone needs a good laugh these days so thanks to my latest mom fail… You’re welcome in advance,” she wrote, along with the spot-on hashtags #idowantthis and #if2020wasaschoolphoto. The hilarious blunder struck a chord, and has been shared more than 36,000 times.
Mason is enjoying his time in the spotlight. Kinley told the Today Show, “He’ll occasionally ask how many more people is he making laugh.” And the family is glad they are spreading some cheer. “I’ve gotten so many messages from people saying they haven’t laughed this hard all year and that it made their day,” Kinley said. “I never thought it would have that effect but I’m so glad we can spread laughter in a crazy time like this.”
Take heart, Kinley family. You’re definitely not the first to have a hilarious school photo gone wrong, and you won’t be the last! My son had a fight with the concrete on our driveway two days before his kindergarten photo was taken.
