Tips to Making Cheesy Mummy Breadstick for Halloween

  • I find keeping the crescent roll dough refrigerated while preparing this dish is best – cold dough is easier to work with as opposed to room temperature dough. Keeping it in the fridge and doing one refrigerated can at a time is best way! Room temperature breadstick dough tends to get sticky, sticking to your surfaces, your cutting utensils, your fingers, and more!
  • We used regular mozzarella cheese sticks here, but this Halloween recipe would be great with any variety of cheese stick you want! You could spice things up with a pepper jack cheese stick or add a little color using a cheddar cheese for these bread sticks!
  • We buttered our breadsticks but you could choose to brush with an egg wash if you want to cut down on calories or fat!

How to Make Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks

To make these deliciously Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks, you will need the following ingredients:

You will also need the following tools:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Carefully unroll all your crescent roll dough and separate it into squares/rectangles instead of separating it into triangles. You should have two triangles per square and four squares per dough package. Place these squares onto a large cutting board. Roll the crescent roll dough flat using a rolling pin.

Roll Out Crescent Roll Dough to Make Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks

Cut rolled dough into eight squares using a good quality sharp knife or pizza cutter.

Prepare Crescent Roll Dough for Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks

Take each square and cut small strips with a sharp knife but being careful to leave the center of each square intact.

Cut Dough for Mummy Breadsticks

Cut each string cheese in half to fit in the middle of each square, then cut the cheese in half lengthwise. Place each quarter of string cheese into the center of each sliced crescent square.

Place Cheesesticks onto Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks

Carefully braid and wrap the cheese with the sliced dough strips. As you wrap, alternate the placement of the strips onto the cheese to resemble a mummy wrap. There is no perfect way to weave this dough, so don’t worry about messing up. Just be sure to tuck the ends of each strip to secure it to itself, ensuring you completely cover the cheese to prevent it dripping and leaking out as the braided breadsticks bake. (Woo, say that 10x fast!)

Wrap Dough Around Cheese for Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks

Place the breadsticks on a lightly greased baking sheet that’s been sprayed with cooking spray (or use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat). Using a basting brush, brush the breadsticks generously with melted butter.

Brush Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks with Butter

Season to taste – add fresh ground salt and pepper onto the breadsticks then sprinkle them with garlic powder, onion powder, and dried parsley as well.

Season Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks

Place two sliced olives per breadstick at the top to resemble eyes. They look like owl eyes and are adorable (and taste really great, too)!

Add Olives to Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until breadsticks are golden brown.

Herbed and Cheesy Mummy Breadsticks

Allow to cool slightly before serving. The best and easiest way to cool these is to place them on a wire cooling rack. Once cool enough to serve, you can serve them with marinara or pizza sauce for dipping.
