Responding to “How are you?” from your boss isn’t so simple during the new coronavirus crisis. People are worried about their health, their families and their futures.

Claire Willet, a grant writer, found herself telling her manager she was “fine.”

To her surprise, her answer did not suffice this time for her boss Hilary. The two were on a work call for their company Free Geek, a nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon, that refurbishes and resells tech. Hilary is the director of community development.

“She was like, ‘NOPE, START OVER, I am not fine and you are not fine and no one is fine. Let’s have a real conversation, how are you?’ And I was like ‘super terrible’ and she was like ‘MUCH BETTER,'” Claire recalled in a now-viral tweet.

Facts. Absolutely no one is doing well, and kudos to Hilary for recognizing that and encouraging her employee to be open.

In the replies, many praised Claire’s supervisor for showing genuine concern for her well-being, especially during this difficult time. Unfortunately, there are plenty of employers who just don’t, as these tweets below indicate.

Claire followed up her initial tweet, writing, “This should be how all bosses handle work calls from now on. Anyone who expects you to be fine and normal and ‘working at 150 percent’ or who makes you feel obligated to dress up on Zoom, or responds to ‘We are in a pandemic’ with ‘That’s no excuse for not being productive,’ is wrong.”

We totally agree.

As the grant writer later revealed, Hilary was wonderful to work with even before the crisis.

Managers of the world: Take note.
